It's Time to Reclaim our Lives -- NOW!
A young poet friend of mine just wrote “whatever happened yesterday is irrelevant, especially if it gets in the way of the day that is here and now.”
Sometimes we have to go back in time to understand the origins of our hurt and pain, and to do the healing necessary for our peace of mind.
Other times, with the right tools and support, we can empower ourselves to decide for ourselves where to go next. Not to be stuck in a lane of traffic where cars on both sides are speeding ahead and we aren’t sure we are even moving.
While we are still alive there is still time: time to remove our protective gear and feel the wind on our faces. Ater a two-year COVID haitus, what do we want to do with our lives? Go back to school? Switch jobs? Move away or towards family? End or begin a relationship?
It’s your life. Let me repeat that. It’s your life. If you are living it to keep someone else alive or happy or sane or safe it’s time to reevaluate your boundaries. Of course it’s wonderful to be a giving, compassionate, empathetic person, but not if it means pushing your own hopes and dreams so far down that they get buried.
You deserve to be happy. You deserve to feel worthy. You deserve to get excited, and hopeful, and enthusiastic. You deserve to love people and feel love back. You deserve to be treated with respect, and kindness, and integrity. You deserve to have fun. You deserve to be heard, even when you are delivering a hard message. You deserve to have privacy, and to share things only with people you trust. You deserve to be “known,” even those parts of you that you’re still trying to improve. You deserve to know your own emotions and moods, so they don’t hit you by surprise, and so that you can use them as a guide in your relationships and your life.
You deserve a therapist that understands the challenges we all face but especially understands YOU, in all your pain and joy and fears and dreams. That is my life’s work.
